Give your recommender something real

Brag sheet builder for college recommendation letters

Surface the stories and traits your counselor and teachers need for a great recommendation letter. Prompts pull out the specifics a recommender cannot invent. Hand the result over and their letter stops being generic.

What it does

  • Gives you separate prompts for a teacher, anchored in their class, and for your counselor, covering your whole time in high school.
  • Gives every prompt a hint, and comes with a short guide: “Stories beat adjectives”, “Refresh their memory of their class”, “One sheet per recommender”.
  • Turns your answers into a document you can export or print.

What you get back

  • A brag sheet tailored to one recommender, with the specific stories, real details and actual outcomes they can nearly lift into the letter.
  • A printable document to hand over when you ask.

What it will not do

  • Write your stories for you. The point is sentences a recommender can quote because they are yours.
  • Hand three people the same generic document. Each recommender should get their own tailored version.

How it works

  1. 1

    Pick who it is for

A teacher or your counselor. The prompts change, because a teacher writes about their classroom and a counselor writes about the whole of high school.

  2. 2

    Answer in full sentences

Thirty to sixty minutes that shapes what colleges read about you. For every quality you claim, attach the moment that proves it.

  3. 3

    Export and deliver it

Hand it over when you ask, at least three to four weeks before the deadline. Ask in person if you can, and say thank you.

Questions

What is a brag sheet?

A document you give a teacher or counselor before they write your recommendation letter, with the specific stories and details they need. Recommenders write dozens of letters a season, and a great brag sheet does most of the letter’s work.

Should my teacher and my counselor get the same brag sheet?

No. A STEM teacher, a humanities teacher and your counselor should each get their own tailored version. That’s why there are separate teacher and counselor prompts.

How long does it take?

Plan on thirty to sixty minutes. Write full sentences and dig into the questions; dashed-off fragments produce generic letters.

When should I hand it over?

When you ask for the letter, at least three to four weeks before the deadline. Follow up politely as the date approaches.

Is the brag sheet builder free?

Yes, it is part of the free account. The Limited plan adds document templates for your resume and brag sheet.
